10 Reasons Why You Should Do The Virtual OmniLYF
Summer Career Exploration Program?
1. To Figure Out Your Career Path
What Should I Do With My Life?
You are about to make a major decision in your life. Wouldn’t it be nice to have some experience to help you make that decision instead of picking something blind? That is what the OmniLYF Summer Exploration Provides. Up to 9 weeks of real-world projects, talking to professionals, and learning what career fits you best.
2. To Decide Which School To Choose
There Are Over 1,800 College Majors To Choose From
While many students know which school they want to go to, far too many make this decision before deciding what their major will be. Unfortunately, not every school provides every major so it is more important to pick your major before selecting your college, especially if you are not positive what you want to do. OmniLYF helps you narrow down which majors you are considering.
3. To Build Your Resume
Beyond retail, fast food, and the local pool
As a high schooler, not many companies are willing to provide you with meaningful experience. Even getting to college, it’s tough to get internships until after your sophomore or junior year and even when you do you don’t always get to do any real-world work. At OmniLYF, you will get real-world work in up to four different careers doing the same thing professionals do right out of college. When you can put not just your job title but the actual projects you worked on, colleges, companies, and scholarship committees swoon. Our previous students have had tremendous success in securing the positions and scholarships they seek. At the end of the summer, we’ll help you take all of the experience and skills you have gained and build a winning resume.
4. To Save Time
The Average Student Takes 5.6 Years To Get A 4-Year Degree
College is a time to experience life for the first time away from your parents. While freshman year is an exciting time to go crazy and wish these days would never end, by senior year, you’ll be counting down the minutes to graduation. By knowing and confirming what you want to do before getting to college, you can prevent the extra time it takes changing majors or worse, graduating into a career you don’t want to do for 40 years.
5. To Save Money
On Average, A 4-Year College Degree Costs $80K-$240K
When we look at how much it costs to go to college, we factor in books, tuition, rent, food, and fees. What we often fail to factor in is the extra cost of changing majors and taking longer to graduate. By knowing and confirming which profession you want to pursue, especially if you want to pursue a graduate degree, you can save yourself tens if not hundreds of thousands of dollars. Not to mention the additional money you can get in scholarships by having this program on your resume.
6. To Build Your Network
70%-80% of Jobs Are Never Posted
In high school, and even early in our careers, it is difficult to build a lasting network with professionals who may be able to help us in the future. In the OmniLYF Career Exploration Program, students meet with a minimum of 4 professionals in each field and are able to take advantage of meeting more through company tours. Not only are these professionals willing to share their experience and their advice, but these are the leaders and future leaders of the organizations where you will be looking for internships and full-time positions.
7. To Learn How to Interview
What Is Your Biggest Weakness?
While many interviewers ask the same questions, different industries use different formats, use different structures, and of course, have different expectations. After completing up to 8 weeks of professional projects and learning all of those new skills, not only will your resume be full, but so will your ability to respond to pertinent interview questions. At the end of the summer we will go over interview prep and even bring in HR representatives and hiring managers to allow you to practice and perfect your technique.
8. To Learn How to Negotiate
We Negotiate Daily, Are You Winning?
You have some major negotiations coming up in life with college scholarships, jobs, houses, cars, etc., but we also negotiate every single day. And while you should certainly want to win your negotiations, you should also want your partner to win as well. At the end of the summer, students learn techniques on how to “expand the pie” and ensure everyone is winning in the big and the small negotiations and students will get experience practicing in various scenarios.
9. To Learn Financial Literacy
Nearly Half of Americans Don’t Expect to Retire Comfortably
Once you’ve earned the money, we want to help make sure you not only keep it, but turn it into your future fortune. After all, the power of compounding interest is most powerful when you are young. Not only that, but too many would be rich people are poor due to easily correctable mistakes. We cover budgeting, investing, retirement, and the true cost of debt as well as many other topics at the end of the summer to ensure you will be well equipped for financial success.
10. To Learn How To Be Successful In “The Real-World”
But What Should I Wear?
Over the OmniLYF experience you will not only learn what it takes to be successful in your projects and how to work as a part of a team but in general how to be successful in the workplace. We cover topics such as how to communicate, what to wear at work, how to build your soft skills, and other good to know when entering the workforce topics.
11. Bonus: Because It’s Fun!
Work Can Be Fun?
While it is certainly work and if this is your first experience working this will challenge you, but the lasting friendships, games, parties, and yes, work, make this experience not only worth it, but really quite fun. If you ask the majority of our students, they will tell you that this is one of the best experiences of their lives and you should certainly do it!
